Tooth sensitivity causes and treatment
Tooth sensitivity is a common condition that can cause pain and discomfort when consuming hot or cold foods and drinks. It is caused by the erosion of the protective enamel layer of the tooth, exposing the underlying dentin layer which is more sensitive to temperature changes. Common causes of tooth sensitivity include brushing too aggressively, consuming acidic foods and drinks, grinding teeth, and gum disease. Treatment of tooth sensitivity depends on the cause. Generally, a dentist will recommend avoiding acidic foods and drinks, using a softer toothbrush, and using a desensitizing toothpaste. In more severe cases, a dentist may recommend a fluoride gel or a bonding agent to help protect the exposed dentin layer.
