Receiving a third dose of a coronavirus vaccine can lead to a tenfold increase in neutralizing antibodies. This increase in antibodies is important for providing longer-term protection from the virus. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that receiving a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine led to a median threefold increase in neutralizing antibody responses.
The study included a group of 24 participants aged 18-55 who had already received two doses of the vaccine [1]. At one week after the third dose, 16 participants demonstrated a median threefold increase in neutralizing antibody responses [1], and at five weeks after the third dose, the median response was ninefold.
The study found that the third dose did not significantly increase the risk of adverse events, suggesting that it can be safely administered. However, the participants were only monitored for six weeks after the third dose, so longer-term effects are still unknown.
